Events Volunteer (Norman Hunter Golf Day)

Opportunity image

The family of much-loved England and Leeds United footballer Norman Hunter have organised another charity golf day in his memory, raising funds for Leeds Hospitals Charity to support cancer research. Last year's event raised a staggering £40k and funded a major piece of equipment for a Leukeamia clinical trial.

Taking place on Friday 24th June at Horsforth Golf Club, we are looking for volunteers to support this exciting day of fundraising for a very special cause. You don't have to like golf to enjoy this volunteering day - it's guaranteed to be a fun day working alongside our lovely Events team!

Tasks will include:

  • Welcoming and interacting with the golf day participants

  • Serving snacks and drinks, and running the 'Halfway House' refreshments stand

  • Giving directions and offering support where needed

  • Setting up and tidying down the events area

  • Representing Leeds Hospitals Charity!

Remember that we can pay reasonable travel expenses, and we would love to hear from you if you'd like to take part but are available at different times!

More about Norman Hunter: Norman began his football career with Leeds United in 1959 and was part of the FIFA 1966 World Cup winning squad where he rose to international fame. He was given the nickname "Bites Yer Legs" Hunter, known as a tough tackling centre half and defensive midfielder on the pitch.

In 2013, Norman was diagnosed with Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and was receiving treatment at Leeds Cancer Centre. He sadly died aged 76 in April 2020 after contracting COVID-19. Professor Peter Hillmen, Consultant in Clinical Haematology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, whose team looked after Norman for seven years said:

“Norman was a humble and delightful gentleman; it was an honour to care for him and I’m so grateful to his family for putting on this golf day to support research into CLL here in Leeds. The money raised through this fantastic event in Norman’s memory will make a huge difference to the research, treatment and care we can offer to patients at Leeds Cancer Centre.”
